Phil Hay: Ian Poveda could be out of season after injury blow
Leeds United forward Ian Poveda sustained an ankle injury during Blackburn Rovers game against Bristol City on Saturday, and he is likely to have an operation.
The Athletic journalist Phil Hay believes the 21-year-old could be out of action for the rest of the campaign, taking to his personal Twitter account to react after the Championship outfit provided an update on his knock.
Poveda was stretchered off in the 1-1 draw after Nathan Baker awkwardly fell on him, and his loan spell could be coming to an abrupt end.
Hay said: “Really bad news for Ian Poveda. A high chance this will end his season.”
“Poveda’s drifted out of the picture at Leeds and this is a big setback for him but to speak to people who’ve worked with him, there’s so much talent there.”
End of season?
Poveda has picked up a severe injury, and the chances of seeing him back in action this season are very slim.
Rehabilitation and recovery would follow immediately once he undergoes the knife, and it will take many months before he can start playing on the pitch again.
The blow is a huge one for Poveda given that he was starting to find his feet at Blackburn, putting in a man-of-the-match performance prior to the international break.
With the fierce competition at Elland Road, it was believed that a temporary spell elsewhere would do his development some good.
Unfortunately, injury has curtailed his campaign and he will now have to find a way to prove himself to Marcelo Bielsa if he returns in time for pre-season.
Poveda remains highly rated, and should the former Manchester City man get it right, he could turn out to be a very important player for Leeds.
