Diego Balbontin: Leeds agree deal to sign Mateo Joseph
Leeds United have agreed a deal to sign Espanyol attacker Mateo Joseph, according to Radio Futbol journalist Diego Balbontin.
The 18-year old is set to put pen to paper on an official contract in the coming hours ahead of a move to Elland Road on January 1, 2022.
The likes of Barcelona and Manchester City have both been linked with the teenage sensation, but it appears Leeds have pipped them to his signature.
Balbontin posted the information on his personal Twitter account on Friday afternoon.
He said: “Espanyol and Leeds bring positions closer together and close the transfer of Mateo Joseph.
“In the absence of a signature, which will take place in the next few hours, the Cantabrian will play in England from January 1.”
Joseph must be one top talent to have been on the radars of Barca and Man City, but it seems Marcelo Bielsa’s track record of handing youngsters chances has worked in Leeds favour.
A couple of the Whites under-23s starlets have featured for the first-team this term, and the Spaniard will fancy his chances of following suit if a move to Yorkshire works out.
The Elland Road outfit boast of some of the most talented youngsters in the land, and they could be on the verge of landing another after earlier links.
Leeds have struggled in attack this season with Patrick Bamford out injured, averaging just a goal per game in the Premier League.
Joseph is not likely to force his way into Bielsa’s first-team plans immediately if he joins the club in January, but he could be playing senior football sooner rather than later if he gets to impress the Argentine early enough.
He is highly-rated and as sought-after as they come, and Leeds could be landing a real gem on their hands again following some brilliant businesses at youth level.
In other Leeds United news, Whites fans will be buzzing after a reliable journalist provided a major injury update.
