Athletic: Exactly why Leeds ace Tyler Roberts was sent packing from Wales camp

Leeds United striker Tyler Roberts has been sent home from the Wales international camp after breaking a curfew in the hotel.

The FAW released a brief statement on Monday lunchtime that said, “Three members of the Cymru senior national squad – Hal Robson-Kanu, Rabbi Matondo and Tyler Roberts – have been released from the Welsh camp today after breaching FAW protocol.

“The three players will be returning to their respective clubs this afternoon.

“The FAW will not be making any further comment.”

More details were reported in The Athletic which said, “The Athletic understands that all three players were caught out of their bedrooms after the curfew imposed on the squad by Wales’ coaching team.

“There is no suggestion that they broke the COVID-19 bubble or that they brought anyone into the team hotel but the failure to respect the curfew time has been judged as a serious enough breach of discipline to justify sending them home.”

Stupid behaviour

Good news and bad news here for Leeds and for Roberts.

It sounds like there was no serious breach of Covid regulations or the team bubble, which means he won’t have to quarantine.

That means he should be fit for the game against Sheffield United on Saturday, barring any internal discipline.

However, it’s still pretty stupid on Roberts’ part.

With such attention on Covid regulations and with the honour of playing for your country, why couldn’t he just stick to the rules?

BBC journalist Adam Pope said that Roberts quickly apologised on social media saying, “Gutted to be leaving the camp early but rules are rules and I shouldn’t have been up in the hotel later than the set time.”

It might seem trivial but the rules are obviously in place for a reason and Roberts should have done as he was told.

It’s not hard to follow a simple rule like that.

Bielsa is a stickler for discipline and he won’t like Leeds being linked with such a high-profile case.

Roberts would have been expecting to start for Leeds on Saturday after a run in the first team following injury to Rodrigo.
