Phil Hay claims Leeds mainstay looks 'less comfortable' as form drops in recent fixtures

Leeds United defender Ben White has been more error-prone in recent weeks, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay.

White, 22, has been a stand-out player for the Whites this season to help them have the best defensive record in the Championship.

However the on-loan Brighton defender was nowhere near his best in the final half an hour against Cardiff last week when Leeds conceded three goals to let slip of a three-goal lead.

Hay has noticed White’s dip in form and has suggested it could be down to the defender’s lack of experience in the Championship, which is hard to remember about sometimes due to how well he’s done on loan at Elland Road.

“I’ve noticed with Ben White over the past couple of weeks he’s suddenly looked that little bit less comfortable than he was,” said the former Yorkshire Evening Post journalist on the Phil Hay Show via Spotify [7min15s].

“Huddersfield were pretty good at unsettling him and on Saturday it was him who lost Morrison for the free header and it was him who let Glaztzel get away from him and get behind Struijk for the 3-3 draw.

“It does kind of remind you that he’s new to the Championship this season and he can’t be Baresi every week.

“There are little errors that haven’t been there before.”

Defensively, White has not shown a massive decrease in form but the on-loan centre-back’s passing has certainly been poor in recent weeks.

According to stats by WhoScored, White’s pass accuracy this season has been 84.9 per cent while on average he has completed 58.8 passes per Championship match.

However against Huddersfield and Cardiff, White’s pass accuracy was 61.1 per cent and 79.2 per cent respectively.

He also averaged 44.5 passes across the two games.

White’s passing has been slack and that may be down to the fact that in his last three appearances he has been partnered by Gaetano Berardi rather than Liam Cooper.

Cooper is set to return to the side soon – perhaps against Fulham this weekend – so maybe White’s passing will improve once Leeds’ club captain is once again alongside him.

In other Leeds United news, Cooper has shared his thoughts on the club’s promotion bid.
