'I don’t even want to think about that' - Leeds star responds to question about promotion bid
Liam Cooper is adamant that he is not going to get carried away by the big gap that Leeds United have opened up between themselves and third place.
After playing 22 matches and despite dropping points against Cardiff last week, Leeds are 10 points ahead of third-placed Preston in the Championship standings.
The Yorkshire club and West Brom have ran well clear of the chasing pack in recent weeks with both sides jostling for first place in the league.
It may only be December but it is starting to look more and more as though the race for automatic promotion is over – but that is not something that Cooper agrees with.
Although the Scotland international could be the man who captains Leeds back to the Premier League after well over a decade of waiting, he is refusing to think about that prospect.
When asked about captaining Leeds back to the top-flight, Cooper, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post, said: “I don’t even want to think about that.
“The next game is the biggest, we go to Fulham on Saturday hungry for another three points and that’s the way it is.
“I don’t want to talk about what it would mean to me and stuff, we have got a job in hand on Saturday and then we will go to the next one.
“But the most important game of the season at the minute is the next one and that’s what we are looking to.”
Cooper is never going to get ahead of himself because as soon as players start to show any kind of overconfidence then it is bound to come back and bite them.
However there is no reason why fans cannot get excited because even though last week’s draw with Cardiff was a tough result to take, the Whites are still in a superb position.
At the moment, it is hard to see Leeds losing enough games for someone like Preston to close down the gap.
And the inconsistent form of the chasing pack suggests that no one is likely to break free from them and launch a serious assault on the top two.
It is important to remember that we are only around halfway through the campaign but at this stage, everything is looking pretty good.
In other Leeds United news, three players have been ruled out of the trip to Fulham.
