Phil Hay: Bielsa wants Leeds United stay in principle
Marcelo Bielsa wants to sign a new Leeds United contract “in principle”, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay.
Ever since being appointed as Leeds manager, Bielsa has never committed himself to more than one year at a time at Elland Road.
While ex-Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Hay admits it would cause massive problems at the club for Bielsa to walk out at the end of the season, he’s shared a huge update on Thursday morning to suggest that the Argentine is very keen on staying.
“There’s no guarantee Bielsa will stay on at Leeds next season but everyone wants him to,” said Hay on The Athletic website.
“It’s likely that he’ll take a new contract and my understanding is that, in principle, he wants to, but a deal ending in June automatically creates some doubt.
“Losing him now would be a huge issue; not just because of his talent and the difference he’s made, but because he is so popular.”
We’re not stupid. We know that Bielsa’s reign as Leeds United manager will one day come to an end but we don’t hope that day comes any time soon.
We especially do not hope it comes this summer because although Bielsa has already achieved his main task of winning promotion to the Premier League, it’s fairly obvious the work isn’t done yet.
Leeds now have to establish themselves as a Premier League club again.
While huge strides have been made towards that since winning the Championship title last season, it does take at least two or three years to really nail down your spot in England’s top-flight.
Leeds are a massive club and deserve to be in the Premier League. They also deserve a top manager like Bielsa so it’s hard to see how Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta will ever be able to replace El Loco.
He’s arguably the most popular and universally loved manager Leeds have ever had. Even rival fans appreciate the way we play, which is not really something we’re that used to in West Yorkshire.
Bielsa is one of the best at what he does in the league. Keeping him should be summer priority number one.
