Paul Merson: Leeds United fans get wool pulled over eyes as relegation trouble escalates

Paul Merson has emptied both barrels on Leeds United fans for their reactions to huge defeats in the Premier League this week.

The Whites were well beaten by Manchester United and Liverpool, but yet the Yorkshire faithful clapped their squad off the pitch.

Merson labelled it “Extraordinary” as he insisted that Leeds are now in real trouble of being relegated to the Championship.

Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson insisted that he couldn’t believe his eyes at what he saw in the past week.

“Look at Leeds,” he said. “They’ve just let in ten goals in two games, and the manager hasn’t changed it. But Leeds fans clapped them off against Manchester United.

“They’d just conceded four goals against their biggest enemies. It was extraordinary. Is everyone getting the wool pulled over their eyes here? Leeds are in trouble.”

Trouble?

We all accepted the effort put in against Manchester United, with most of our main stars out injured, we pushed one of the most expensive squads in the entire world.

Liverpool was different, and although most of us didn’t expect a result, it was men against boys for most of the 90 minutes.

That has to change against Spurs, who have a fragile spine that can be attacked easily, as Burnley proved in midweek.

We got a big result in this fixture last season, and it is critical that we pick up a win sooner rather than later.

Merson wouldn’t get it, but we all know that the atmosphere will be once again through the roof tomorrow afternoon as we go looking for a huge win.

Bring it on and leave it all out there.
