Paul Merson can't believe Leeds v Liverpool was postponed

Paul Merson can’t believe Liverpool didn’t fight harder to play Leeds this weekend after their match was postponed due to positive COVID cases.

Leeds were supposed to travel to Anfield on Boxing Day on the back of one win in eight games, but the Premier League confirmed on Thursday that the game will be rescheduled for a later date at the request of the Whites.

But after taking on Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal in their last three games with a very weakened team due to injuries, Sky Sports pundit Merson is shocked Liverpool didn’t try harder to keep the game on.

Speaking in his column with SportsKeeda, Merson thinks there is no better time to play Leeds than now.

“Liverpool’s game with Leeds has been cancelled and I can’t believe they haven’t tried harder to keep this game on,” he said.

“There’s no better time to play Leeds, and Liverpool could now find themselves over seven points behind Manchester City before the end of the year.”

Saving grace

While Merson is probably spot on about Liverpool having no better time to play Leeds, the exact opposite can be said for the would-be visitors in this game.

Leeds are on a horrid run of form and sit just above the relegation zone in poor form, so a trip to Anfield is just begging for a thumping with a depleted squad.

This is arguably the worst time for them to play this game, so it’s fortunate that it’s been called off on this occasion.

With the game against Aston Villa in doubt now also, it means Bielsa will have a chance to rest and get some players back to health before the next game and then try to put together a run for survival.

Liverpool will be the favourites whenever these two teams meet at Anfield, so it probably won’t make too much difference in the long run but Leeds should be counting their blessings this game isn’t happening.
