Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele is a huge fan of Leeds United, according to Patrick Bamford.
The striker shared the surprising fact on the Leeds United Official Podcast, explaining that teammate Illan Meslier made him aware of the support.
The Frenchman has previously shown his support for the Whites on Instagram and it appears he has a special liking for Bamford and Kalvin Phillips.
“After the Fulham game [Meslier] was like ‘I need your shirt please’,” said Bamford.
“I said ‘yeah, that’s fine, who for?’. He said, ‘Ah, Dembele’. I said, ‘wait, who?’. He said, ‘the guy from Barcelona’.
“I was like ‘what, he wants my shirt?’ and he was like ‘yeah, he wants yours and Kalvin’s shirts because he’s a massive fan of Leeds and watches every game’.
“I was like ‘you serious?’ and I said ‘okay, but you’ve got to get me his shirt then in return’, so he Facetimed me at midnight the other day and showed me this Barcelona shirt that says ‘to my bro Bamford, from Dembele’.”
Gaining big attention
It is nice to hear a player of Dembele’s calibre showing an interest in us.
This is a star signed for £135.5million by Barcelona who gets to play with Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann week in week out.
The fact he acknowledges the skill of Bamford and Phillips is quite frankly amazing and shows how far we have come.
Credit obviously goes to Marcelo Bielsa not just for improving players but the style of play he has instilled, which has captivated fans of the game not just here but as far as Barcelona.
It would be nice to be talking about a potential transfer as a result but Dembele is a key winger for Spanish giants so it’s safe to say we can rule that out.
However, if Dembele is a fan there are sure to be others.
Hopefully, our style of play and the Bielsa factor can appeal to some other talented players this summer – getting more players like Raphinha would be most welcome.
