Kemar Roofe left Leeds United in 2019 but he has nothing but positive things to say about the club and paid particular praise to Marcelo Bielsa.

Roofe scored 33 goals in 122 games at Elland Road and was a key part of the side in Bielsa’s first year at Elland Road.

He learnt a lot from the Argentine in terms of tactics and hard work and seems to have enjoyed every minute of his Whites career.

On The Super 6 Podcast Laura Woods asked Roofe about one match in particular, the 3-2 win over Blackburn in 2018.

Roofe said, “That’s one of the days I will never forget in football, it was unbelievable.

“Scoring a goal is good anyway but when it’s a comeback when we need to win, at home, last moment, pffft yeah it was crazy.

“I watch the videos now and again of that goal and the celebrations, all of our players were running different directions, it was class.”

Touching on Bielsa, Roofe explained what he learnt from the manager, “Understanding the game even more, how simple to make the game even down to the formation.

“Until working with Bielsa I didn’t realise how important different formations were… you think ‘this is genius’ and it’s probably just simple for him.”

Bielsa influence

It seems every player who departs Elland Road leaves with fond memories of both the club and Bielsa.

The Argentine’s ability to improve and teach players new things is quite remarkable, and they are all grateful for the insight he gives them.

Even brilliant players like Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha benefit from Bielsa’s instructions.

The latter has gone from being a relatively unknown Ligue 1 winger to a star sought by Liverpool and Manchester United in the space of a few months.

That is the Bielsa factor at work and his presence should help us attract top-quality players this summer.

We must continue to build and not stagnate, otherwise we could take the same trajectory as Sheffield United – they finished ninth last season.

It is pleasing to hear Roofe talk so highly of the club as he was well-respected during his time here.

His move to Anderlecht ultimately benefitted the club and it is good to see both him and us doing well this year.
