Patrick Bamford reveals advice he gave to Leeds youngster Joe Gelhardt

Leeds striker Patrick Bamford has revealed the advice he gave to youngster Joe Gelhardt ahead of the Whites’ trip to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

With Bamford currently injured and Rodrigo also sidelined, Marcelo Bielsa handed a first Premier League start to 19-year-old Gelhardt in North London.

He was one of the Whites’ standout performers in a 2-1 defeat, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp describing the teenager as “really exciting”.

Speaking on the Official Leeds United Podcast, Bamford said: “It must have been on Saturday when Joffy found out he was playing and I said to him whatever you do just shoot.

“Whenever you get the ball just shoot, doesn’t matter if you miss but just keep shooting.

“And I thought until his legs went around the 60th minute, he was unbelievable. After the game, I was saying to him like you did what you had to do.

“He was strong, held the ball up well but the only thing when you are playing nine, make sure you spend more time in the box.

“He was listening and he was kind of buzzing that he made his first start but the way he played, he looked like started a few games.”

Exciting talent

No one was left in any doubt over Gelhardt’s potential following his performance against Spurs on Sunday and the teenager has one of the best role models to learn from in Bamford.

He looked like the perfect fit for Marcelo Bielsa’s team with his high energy approach and driving runs forward.

As Bamford states, you would not have been able to tell that it was Gelhardt’s first top flight start as his fearless attitude was clear to see.

He took the England international’s advice too; only Dan James (seven) took more shots than Gelhardt (four) out of the players on both teams at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium [via WhoScored].

With Bamford not expected to return for Leeds’ trip to Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend, Gelhardt could be given another opportunity to impress.
