Pat Nevin: Leeds star Ezgjan Alioski could have been 'riled up' on Monday
Leeds United left-back Ezgjan Alioski nearly fluffed his lines on Monday for North Macedonia at the EUROs.
The exit-bound star missed a penalty for his country, but managed to fire home the rebound to give his country a chance against Ukraine.
Pat Nevin was on duty for the BBC, and praised Alioski despite the fact he was likely riled up after missing the spot-kick.
Speaking on the BBC’s live blog for the clash, Nevin reacted after the major incident which could have left Alioski embarrassed.
“That came to Alioski at some pace,” he said.
“Most people would mis-hit it or sky it over the bar as they are all riled up after missing the penalty.
“But he kept calm, kept it low and kept it on target. That’s actually a very good finish indeed.”
Saved his blushes.
Alioski is always the centre of attention, so him missing this spot-kick on the biggest stage would have been awful.
Thankfully, he fired home the rebound in bicycle kick fashion, smashing it home and giving them a huge chance, one they couldn’t take in the end.
With one game against Holland and a huge win needed, it looks as though his countries visit to the EUROs will end with no wins and disappointment.
He can leave with his head held high though, not many can say they have scored a goal at a major tournament such as the EUROs, now Alioski has.
Victor Orta and Marcelo Bielsa will be watching closely, and they will surely do everything they can to sort out this contract dispute in the next two weeks.
