Leeds United enjoyed a brilliant victory over Manchester City but Noel Whelan voiced concerns about Rodrigo ahead of kick-off.
The Spaniard missed out on the matchday squad due to another problem that he picked up in training, per Phil Hay.
Rodrigo’s absence means he has now missed 10 league games, and Whelan expressed his disappointment at the club-record signing.
He told BBC Radio Leeds, “It is an absolutely horrible start to his career at Leeds United, he’s been in and out, Covid, injuries, just getting back into fitness again and now he’s picked up another niggle.
“He’s our record signing, we want to see players like that out there on the field especially against teams like Manchester City when he can be the difference and show us what he’s all about, why he’s an international playing for Spain and why we brought him to Leeds United.
“We’ve hardly seen anything of him which is really disappointing but it’s a testament to the rest of the players who are out there now.”
A lot of excitement surrounded our four major signings last summer and although each has displayed their quality, three of the four still have a lot to prove.
Raphinha is the pick of the bunch and is a player capable of taking us into Europe – even Man City did not know how to deal with him on Saturday.
However, like Rodrigo, Diego Llorente and Robin Koch have experienced their own injury issues this term.
It was good to see the pair on the pitch together at the Etihad – that was the first time they have played together for longer than a minute.
Liam Cooper’s red card means we might finally see them line up alongside one another against Liverpool and that is an exciting prospect.
Also, we hope Rodrigo is able to overcome this latest setback but being realistic, we think this season is a bit of a write-off for him.
If Rodrigo can have a successful Euros and complete a full pre-season he will hopefully hit the ground running next term and begin to prove why we spent so much on him.
