Nahitan Nandez may have played last game for Cagliari amid Leeds interest

Leeds United have been observing the situation of Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez for some time, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato.

The website claims that Argentine could have played his last game for the Serie A outfit ahead of the January transfer window, after his agent revealed that the club promised to let him leave once a suitable offer is brought to the table.

While Nandez, 25, still has a contract with Cagliari until the summer of 2024, he could be let go if suitors meet his £31million release clause.

Calciomercato reports that they could accept less in January, as they badly need to reinvest in their squad for the second half of 2021-22 after finding themselves in 19th place in the Serie A table at the end of 18 games.

Advantage?

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano told OddsChecker in October 2020 that Nandez “is a player that Bielsa likes so much since he was in Boca juniors”, and it appears Leeds still have him on their radar.

Marcelo Bielsa needs some help right now after injuries decimated his squad, and a move for the South American could make sense.

Nandez is a central midfielder by trade, but he has been a utility player for his side this season.

As shown on WhoScored, he has featured in eight different positions so far, and it is not a surprise that the Leeds boss loves him.

Nandez has played at right-back, right midfield, right-wing, left midfield, in defensive midfield and even as a striker, and that speaks volumes.

Kalvin Phillips, Patrick Bamford and Dan James are currently on the injury sidelines right now, and the Whites could be signing someone capable of filling in for the trio.

Whether they plan to firm up long-term interest in him remains to be seen, but the Elland Road outfit could do with such a versatile and quality player right now.
