MOT View: Leeds have left Bielsa out to dry and it is not acceptable

Marcelo Bielsa is a football man through and through but since he’s been at Leeds United he’s had to deal with a lot of big off-the-pitch issues.

Now admittedly, Spy Gate was of his doing, so that’s fair enough.

But in today’s press conference he had to field a heap of questions about Kiko Casilla, his ban and the duty of care owed to Jonathan Leko.

Bielsa answered all the questions patiently and eloquently, albeit through his interpreter, but it really felt like he’d been hung out to dry by the club today.

When asked what the club’s position was towards Casilla Bielsa had to admit, “I don’t know the club’s position”.

This could all have been avoided if Leeds had put out a statement ahead of the press conference answering the key questions – like, will Casilla be disciplined internally by the club?

The press conference was about the Huddersfield game and while Bielsa can’t have expected to avoid answering any questions on Casilla, he could have directed the journalists to the statement for the key issues.

As it is, it just looks like there’s no clear view at the club, despite the FA releasing their written reasons at the start of the week.

We’re up for putting the Casilla issue behind us and moving on with winning promotion, but there are questions that need to be answered first and it shouldn’t be Bielsa who’s put in the firing line.
