MOT View: Guardiola offers Leeds fans big encouragement over Poveda deal with 'perfect' claim

Ian Poveda became the second signing of the January transfer window for Leeds United this week when he swapped Manchester City for the Championship club.

The 19-year-old attacker has joined the Whites on a long-term deal until the end of the 2023/24 season.

Although Poveda has just one senior appearance to his name in his career so far, he has arrived at Elland Road very highly-rated having had previous spells at Chelsea, Arsenal, Barcelona and, of course, Man City.

After completing his move to Leeds, City boss Pep Guardiola was asked about the deal that saw Marcelo Bielsa strike another transfer agreement with the Premier League giants.

Guardiola has – as he always has been – been full of praise for Bielsa and has claimed that Poveda is the kind of player who will be a great match for the Argentine’s style of play.

“Because he’s young, he has to play. He was not able and Leeds United is an incredible challenge,” Guardiola said on Sunday, as quoted by LeedsLive.

“To be training with one of the best, maybe the best, managers in the world in terms of how he helps the players to be better players.

“He has an incredible power to develop. For the way Leeds play suits perfect for his qualities.”

When asked if the long-term deal that Poveda agreed to sign at Elland Road was down to Bielsa, Guardiola added: “I don’t know. I didn’t speak with Ian, but anyway, either way, it’s a really good decision for him.”

Guardiola’s comments should offer Leeds fans a lot of encouragement over Poveda, who has basically arrived as an unknown quantity at Elland Road.

Poveda mainly plays on the right-wing but he also has the ability to line up on the left or in a central attacking midfield role.

The England youth international may be seen as a replacement for Jack Clarke after he returned to Tottenham but based on how Guardiola reckons he’ll fit into Bielsa tactics, it’s likely that the teenager is being lined up for a first-team role at Leeds.

We cannot wait to see what Poveda can do at Elland Road.

Bielsa clearly rates him highly and Guardiola has always been someone who is quick to big up the Leeds boss.

It should be a perfect match.

In other Leeds United news, Danny Murphy has urged the Whites to re-sign this former player.
