'Go and get him': BBC pundit urges Leeds to sign £12k/wk PL player who 'could be the difference'
Danny Murphy has urged Leeds United to end their pursuit for a new centre-forward by re-signing Billy Sharp from Sheffield United.
Sharp, 33, has scored one goal in 14 Premier League appearances since winning promotion with the Blades last season and produced a fine display on Saturday as he assisted both goals in the 2-0 win against Millwall in the FA Cup.
The veteran striker has already been linked with a return to Elland Road this month with the Yorkshire Evening Post reporting that he is an option to replace Eddie Nketiah in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad.
Although it seems more likely that RB Leipzig striker Jean-Kevin Augustin will join Leeds this month, ex-Liverpool player Murphy has suggested that Sharp could be the striker who will help Leeds seal their long-awaited return to the Premier League.
“Especially Leeds because he wouldn’t have to move house which is important for players and he was there many years ago.
“Go and get him, Leeds.”
Sharp is one of the most proven Championship strikers out there.
Between 2009/10 and 2019/20, only Jordan Rhodes has scored more goals than the Blades forward in the second-tier [transfermarkt].
However there is the small matter of the fact the £12,000-a-week [Spotrac] striker completely flopped in his previous spell at Leeds, when he scored just five goals in 35 appearances.
Augustin seems like a better option for Leeds anyway.
The Whites will no doubt want a new striker who can go up into the Premier League with them – if promotion is sealed.
Sharp is getting on now and Augustin is still young at 22.
The Frenchman is perhaps a more risky option but definitely someone who’ll be better in the long term.
In other Leeds United news, there’s been a 30 per cent clause in the latest completed deal at Elland Road.
