Garry Monk shares verdict on Leeds, delivers less than convincing response to promotion chase
After two games without a win, the next month has become even more important for Leeds United.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side still sits eight points clear of the play-offs in the Championship but play three of the current top five in the next three weeks.
Games against Preston and West Brom are followed by one with Sheffield Wednesday, with Garry Monk’s side currently sitting in third place after a nice run of form under the former Whites boss.
Monk was recently asked whether or not he sees his side catching up with Leeds, and he delivered a less than convincing reply.
“No, look, in terms of squad dynamic, I think they (West Brom and Leeds) are ahead of anyone else in this league. I think that’s the reason why they are where they are,” he said in a recent press conference.
“I think it’s for those two teams to lose their positions. I don’t see that happening. We know in this league, anything can happen, but we’re not really focused on them if I’m honest with you.”
After Leeds somehow dropped out of the playoffs during Monk’s reign at Elland Road years ago, it seems smart for him to not put too much pressure on his current side.
As for Leeds now, Bielsa will know that if Leeds beat the likes of Wednesday and Preston, that will only extend their gap as they look to secure automatic promotion.
