Mikel Arteta rules Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang out of Leeds United clash
Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will not play for Arsenal against Leeds United this weekend.
The Gunners face Leeds at Elland Road on Saturday (18 December), but the 32-year-old forward will not be in the side.
As shared by Fabrizio Romano on his personal Twitter profile on Friday morning (17 December), Arteta said: “He’s not available for selection against Leeds.”
Aubameyang has not had a great start to the season, scoring just four goals in his first 14 Premier League appearances.
He has missed their last two games – a 3-0 win over Southampton (11 December) and a 2-0 victory over West Ham (15 December) – owing to a disciplinary breach.
The Gabon international went to France to bring his mother back to England but arrived back late and was punished by Arteta, who removed him from selection and stripped him of the Arsenal captaincy this week.
But while his reputation takes a battering, there’s no denying that he remains a quality player on his day, as Leeds found out last season when he scored a hat-trick at the Emirates Stadium in a 4-2 win (14 February).
Leeds have a number of their own stars out due to injury, including defenders Liam Cooper, Pascal Struijk and Liam Cooper.
The remaining defenders will be happy to see Aubameyang ruled out for Saturday, but Gabriel Martinelli, who scored for Arsenal against West Ham, will hope to start again, and the Whites need to be on guard against the 20-year-old Brazilian.
In other Leeds United news, Jim White shared a major Whites striker transfer update on Wednesday.
