Matt Holland: Leeds left-back Junior Firpo struggled in halftime v Brighton
Leeds United and Brighton and Hove Albion played out a goalless draw in the opening 45 minutes of their clash on Saturday evening at AMEX Stadium.
Spanish left-back Junior Firpo struggled against the pace of Tariq Lamptey and was booked five minutes into the clash, and Matt Holland slammed him for struggling and getting close to getting another yellow card.
The Leeds man was lucky to escape another booking, and he will need to be careful in the second half if he wants to finish the game.
Commentating on the incident on Premier League’s world feed after hacking Lamptey down for the third time, the talkSPORT pundit said: “He’s struggling. Pins his man down. He won’t get more escapes before getting another yellow.”
Lamptey is one of the fastest players in the English top-flight, and it is not surprising that he gave the Leeds full-back a torrid game in the opening 45 minutes.
The Brighton star created four chances in the first-half and definitely enjoyed tormenting Firpo.
Referee Craig Pawson was lenient after handing the Whites man an early yellow card, but he might not be left with much of a choice in the second half if the Spaniard commits more fouls.
Firpo came into the starting XI after coming on against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, but he did not justify his inclusion in the lineup.
He replaced Pascal Struijk who played in the position against Spurs, and the fans would have been wondering why Marcelo Bielsa made such a decision.
Firpo needs to improve when action resumes or he could put Leeds in a lot of trouble in their search for a third Premier League win this season.
