Matheus Cunha axed from matchday squad amid Leeds United links

Matheus Cunha, who has previously been linked with Leeds United, has reportedly been axed from Hertha Berlin’s matchday squad.

According to Sky Sports’ Max Bielefeld, the Hertha Berlin attacker will not be in the squad to take on Wolfsburg later today (Saturday).

He also stated that Atletico Madrid are understood to be one of the possible destinations for the Brazilian.

He wrote, “Matheus Cunha is not in the squad against VfL Wolfsburg today, according to Sky. Atletico Madrid continue to be a possibility, but are currently pursuing other options. It remains to be seen whether they will really put 30 million euros on the table”

Per German publication BZ, Leeds were keen on signing the 22-year-old, but Sky Sports Italy’s Fabrizio Romano recently threw cold water on that speculation.

Should Atletico be unwilling to pay that kind of money, we must re-enter the race for the player as we desperately need to add to our attacking riches this season.

The Brazilian can play a plethora of attacking roles and is a threat wherever he plays in the final third – giving Marcelo Bielsa a number of options to deploy him.

He would serve as an upgrade on Jack Harrison and could go on to become as good as Raphinha, who hit the ground in his first season at Elland Road.

Cunha enjoys playing as the lone striker, much like Rodrigo and Patrick Bamford, but knowing Bielsa, he could field him out wide or even in midfield.

The 22-year-old is lethal in front of goal, both in terms of finding the back of the net, as well as setting up chances for his teammates.

Leeds United

He was involved in 16 goals last season for a side not known to be one of the most creative and attack-minded teams in Germany.

A move to a club like Leeds would certainly coincide with an increase in his attacking output as well.

FC Lugano manager and former coach of Cunha, Maurizio Jaccobacci, waxed his lyrical last November, labelling him an “excellent” player. [First Time Finish]

We must go back in with a bid for him closer to deadline day and like we signed Raphinha, we should do everything we can to bring his compatriot to West Yorkshire.
