Leeds United unlikely to move for Yangel Herrera
Leeds United will not pursue Yangel Herrera’s signing if they get Lewis O’Brien to Elland Road this summer, claims Beren Cross.
The LeedsLive reporter also stated that there was not much in the Whites’ quest to sign the 23-year-old Venezuelan, to begin with.
This is after a report in El Gol Digital that claimed the Whites were willing to shell out £20.4million to sign the Manchester City midfielder.
O’Brien, who’s plying his trade for Huddersfield Town could be on his way to Elland Road as Leeds are heating up their pursuit to sign him, according to Yorkshire Live.
When asked about if O’Brien’s arrival would see the club not signing Herrera, Cross said, “I think that’s a fair summation, though I don’t believe the Herrera stuff has ever carried any great weight.”
Is O’Brien the answer?
It seems that we’re now pursuing the signing of O’Brien, but we’re still not fully sold on the idea that he would strengthen our first team.
Cross himself, in his Q&A stated that people he’s spoken to are not convinced the 24-year-old would walk into our playing eleven and that it will at least take him two or three years to become a regular.
We certainly cannot continue to play a midfield two of Mateusz Klich and Rodrigo for too long, and signing Herrera would be a better alternative than bringing the Huddersfield Town player to Elland Road.
His versatility is something that would make him an instant hit with Marcelo Bielsa as the Man City midfielder is capable of playing as a defensive midfielder, an orthodox central midfielder as well as in a full-action box-to-box role.
Herrera spent two seasons on loan at Granada and La Liga pundit Terry Gibson told talkSPORT [08/04/21] that he had been “outstanding” in Spain.
However, as Cross mentioned, there’s unlikely to be much in our pursuit to sign Herrera and we would have to deal with the fact that O’Brien’s not going to be an instant upgrade on the options we’ve got.
