Mateo Joseph torn to shreds by Sky Sports pundit after what Leeds United ace did v Watford

Lee Hendrie has blasted Mateo Joseph after the Leeds United ace missed a sitter in the win against Watford.

Joseph came on as a 72nd-minute substitute for Joel Piroe as the Whites earned a 2-1 victory over Watford in the Championship at Elland Road on Tuesday (22 October).

Daniel Farke’s side had to fight hard for the three points despite taking a two-goal lead within seven minutes, with the Hornets getting back in the game through Kwadwo Baah’s 47th-minute goal.

Joseph blew the chance to put the game to bed after a sublime cross from Daniel James set him up for a close-range header with eight minutes left on the clock.

Commentating live on Sky Sports (9:29 pm, 22 October), Hendrie said: “What a ball. What a ball from Dan James.

“I think he’s struggling for options here, but utilises the outside of the boot [to find Joseph], he should’ve scored.

“[Joseph is] a few yards out from goal, makes it so easy for Daniel Bachmann in goal, doesn’t really test him.

“The ball is outstanding from Dan James and then it’s a tame header, isn’t it? Straight into Bachmann.

“Really poor, that should’ve been game over.”

Mateo Joseph miss chance to continue form for Leeds United

It was very unlike Joseph to head the ball straight at Daniel Bachmann. He would have grabbed his third league goal of the season had he managed to slightly angle the header.

The 21-year-old would, therefore, be more disappointed than anyone to have not found the back of the net, having done so off the bench in Leeds United’s 2-0 win over Sheffield United on Friday (18 October).

He should be grateful that Watford did not go on to grab a late equaliser with the game only ending after 10 minutes of added time.

Leeds fans would also feel for James, who was unlucky not to get an assist after Joseph’s missed the chance. The Welshman has been restricted to just five appearances due to injuries this season and a goal contribution would have boosted his confidence.

Nevertheless, a win is a win and the Whites are now placed second in the table having gone six games without a loss.

In other Leeds United news, another Sky Sports pundit was stunned by a “horrible” incident in the game earlier on.
