Mateo Joseph on brink of international switch amid Leeds United form
Leeds United starlet Mateo Joseph is on the brink of changing allegiances from Spain to England, according to Spanish media outlet AS.
The 19-year-old is currently the top scorer in Premier League 2 with 11 goals to his name and he made his senior debut against Wolves in the Carabao Cup before coming off the bench away at Tottenham Hotspur.
He currently represents Sapin at youth level but AS understands that Leeds United now believe the Three Lions want to call him up for the Under-20 World Cup in Indonesia.
He is yet to make an official decision and there has been no call-up yet with the tournament not until May 2023 but the Spanish federation are already concerned that he may choose England over them.
Theoretically, he could also choose to represent Antigua and Barbuda at the international level due to deep-rooted family ties but no decision has been made yet.
Joseph has really taken a big step forward this season after joining the club in January from Espanyol and a lot of that could be thanks to the arrival of Sonny Perkins from West Ham United.
The England Under-19 international and his agent had fallen out with the necessary people at the London Stadium and the Whites pounced to bring him to Elland Road for a small compensation fee over the summer.
All season, the two have played alongside each other and excelled to be two of the Premier League 2’s top performers so far this season with plenty of link-up play between them.
Joseph may want to play even more often with Perkins and Darko Gyabi, who also represent s England at youth level, and the Under-20 World Cup may well be the perfect chance to do that on the international stage.
For Leeds, the more the duo play together the better because they will learn each other’s game and become so in the that it could really benefit the Whites one day.
