Martin Keown brands Leeds United survival "one of the greatest" ever seen

Martin Keown has gushed over Leeds United, branding their last day Premier League survival as “one of the greatest escapes” ever seen.

Jesse Marsch’s side started their game against Brentford knowing they had to better the result of their relegation rivals Burnley if they had any chance of staying up.

Not only did the Clarets lose 2-1 to Newcastle – a goal from Raphinha and a last-gasp winner from Jack Harrison saw them beat the Bees 2-1 in west London.

The former Arsenal defender could barely contain his excitement as he told Final Score via BBC’s live coverage of the game: “I think it is one of the greatest escapes we have ever seen from Leeds.”

Job done.

Wow. That is it – Leeds United have completed their escape from the drop. They will be a Premier League team next season.

It has been an absolute rollercoaster of a season. Marcelo Bielsa found himself sacked after uncharacteristically awful form for several months that looked to see the Whites guaranteed to go down.

Jesse Marsch somewhat steadied the ship but the damage was done and there was a huge battle on the cards for the American.

The Elland Road outfit looked to be safe until Everton and Burnley’s impressive runs dragged them back into danger ahead of the last few weeks of the season.

All odds were stacked against them on Sunday [May 22] but they showed amazing character to fight back and usurp Burnley in 17th.

It wasn’t pretty from Leeds but they dug in and got the win and that is all that matters.

Everyone can breathe a huge sigh of relief now because the nightmare that this season was is now over and the club can look forward to the next chapter.
