Mark Lawrenson predicts outcome of Leeds United clash v Burnley

Leeds United will face Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday at Elland Road.

Ahead of the game, BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson has predicted a 2-1 victory for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

The Whites are going through a disappointing spell and they will be looking to bounce back to winning ways against the Clarets.

Lawrenson has suggested that Burnley are in “much deeper trouble” as they are fighting for survival. Writing his predictions for the BBC, Lawrenson doesn’t think their situation will change on Sunday.

“Leeds shipped a lot of goals before their Christmas fixtures were postponed because of a Covid outbreak at the club, but they should have some more players fit and available now and I really don’t see Burnley doing the same damage as Manchester City and Arsenal in any case,” he said.

“Both these teams have had a disappointing time of it in the first half of the season, but the Clarets are in much deeper trouble at the bottom of the table. They don’t have the biggest squad, so it will be interesting to see what they do during the January transfer window to try to climb the table.”

Must win

Leeds are heading into this game on the back of three consecutive defeats. Their festive period games had been postponed and it came as a blessing in disguise for them.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side were down to bare bones when they faced Arsenal, although the Argentine never used injuries as an excuse for their poor run of form.

The break has allowed some of their key players to return to full fitness, with the likes of Diego Llorente, Robin Koch, Dan James, and Junior Firpo all set to return.

Burnley are winless in their last six games in the Premier League, and they are missing several key players are well.

Leeds desperately need to get back to some sort of momentum, and they have a great opportunity to do so against a depleted Burnley side.

The Whites are still missing the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper, but they should have enough quality to secure all three points.

In other Leeds United news, four players are set to return against Burnley in a more positive update.
