Mario Melchiot has claimed that Leeds United would change the Premier League should they earn promotion from the Championship this season.
The Sky Sports pundit believes that the atmosphere that fans create at Elland Road proves just how much they love their team.
The Whites are currently top of the Championship and require 10 points from their final five games to seal the deal.
Melchiot was speaking after Darren Bent admitted he believes Leeds already have one foot in the Premier League.
“Leeds are one of those sides, trust me, I’ve been there a number of times, so I know exactly how that stadium feels like and how the fans love their team,” he said on Sky Sports’ Football Show (07/07 11:34 am)
“If they can come into the Premier League, a side like Leeds definitely change things in the Premier League – I think it’s one of the teams that you definitely have to look at.”
Melchiot played at Stamford Bridge between 1999 and 2004, meaning he would have travelled to Elland Road at a time where David O’Leary had built a superb side in West Yorkshire.
That is the atmosphere he is referring too when talking about playing the Whites. Just think about the Champions League era, regularly finishing towards the top of the Premier League – this is what Melchiot is talking about.
Leeds currently average a home attendance of 35,321 fans each week at Elland Road. That is better than 10 current Premier League clubs – the top flight is screaming out for the Whites.
