Marcelo Bielsa shares Leeds United January transfer plans amid '£20-30m' claim

Marcelo Bielsa has cast doubts over whether Leeds United will be able to sign any new players in the January transfer window.

Leeds lost 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday with the away side without a number of their key stars, including Raphinha, Rodrigo and Patrick Bamford.

Speaking to the media after the game, in quotes relayed by The Athletic’s Phil Hay via his personal Twitter profile, Bielsa was unsure over whether the Whites have the capital to pursue players they have identified.

Hay wrote: “Bielsa asked about January window and whether he needs to add players. Says it would depend on getting better players than he has, and they can be expensive. Says adding to the group ‘should not be evaluated without looking at the economic possibilities’.”

Hay added: “Re-iterated again that he feels Leeds have already invested heavily in players on his watch. Says a lot of suitable players fall into the £20million/£30million bracket.”

FFP causing problems?

With Andrea Radrizzani at the helm and increasing investment from the San Fransisco 49ers, money is not expected to be an issue at Leeds.

Therefore, suggestions that the biggest obstacle to Leeds recruiting in January is money-related is rather strange.

However, it may be that Financial Fair Play is causing issues as it forces clubs to restrict what they spend in a certain timeframe.

It hit Everton hard during the summer as they spent just £1.8million on Demarai Gray with the need to comply with the regulations.

Perhaps this is what is causing Leeds issues, so they will probably have to get creative in January.

That may mean some loan deals are on the cards, but those usually prove more difficult as good players are not ordinarily loaned out unless they are unwanted or are seeking big wages.

In other Leeds United news, Jeff Stelling was left stunned by this Whites player in his instant Twitter reaction to Sunday’s 2-1 loss at Tottenham.
