Kalvin Phillips stuns Jeff Stelling after Leeds United lose 2-1 v Tottenham Hotspur
Kalvin Phillips wowed Sky Sports broadcaster Jeff Stelling on Sunday despite Leeds United losing 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur.
Writing via his personal Twitter profile after goals from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Sergio Reguilon cancelled out Daniel James’ first-half opener, Stelling was full of praise for the 25-year-old.
“Not sure how Kalvin Phillips was on the losing side today,” Stelling said. “He was different class!”
Star at the back
Phillips was thrust into a central defensive role on Sunday as Marcelo Bielsa opted to field a three-man defence at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
It’s a position not entirely alien to the England international as he has been asked to drop back on occasion by his manager when he changes formation.
Once again, Phillips showed he is just as influential when playing even deeper.
Positioned between Liam Cooper and Diego Llorente, Phillips dictated play during the first half and even made advances further forward.
He took a free-kick in the first half that Hugo Lloris had to tip wide and he was a standout performer in the Whites side.
Bielsa was shorn of the services of more key players as Raphinha and Rodrigo failed to make the matchday squad with issues, and it was on Phillips and other senior stars to step up.
He did so, and while the Whites could not hang on for a positive result, they can feel proud of their efforts and how they led for nearly an hour with an under-strength starting XI.
