Marcelo Bielsa reveals he didn't want Cody Drameh to leave Leeds on loan

Marcelo Bielsa has revealed he didn’t want Cody Drameh to leave Leeds on loan this month, but the player’s wishes meant he allowed him to.

20-year-old full-back Drameh joined Cardiff on loan for the rest of the season earlier this week, in search of more regular game time.

Bielsa was speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday [Jan 14th, Sky Sports] and revealed that he was against the loan, but ultimately it was Drameh’s decision to leave.

“I didn’t think he needed to play games elsewhere,” Bielsa said. “He was a player that is necessary with all the absences we’ve had, but he preferred to go and play outside of Leeds.

“In a situation where there are opportunities for the youngsters, which has increased clearly and in this case, Drameh would prefer to experiment outside our team.

“I consider that position valid and it doesn’t make sense to oppose him for what I imagine is a great opportunity. He imagined it in a different way and it’s more important what he thinks than what I think. I don’t think it’s convenient to impose where a player does or doesn’t want to belong.

“Evidently, what I proposed to them is not what they desire so I don’t crisis or condemn it.”

Weaker

While Drameh will definitely get an opportunity to show his skills and ability out on loan, he has left Leeds in a weaker position this month as they chase survival.

Leeds have won just four games so far in the league this season but sit eight points above the drop zone, although Burnley will have three games in hand after this game week.

Drameh’s was seen as the cover at right-back and in a squad that has suffered tremendously with injuries this season, it seems a bizarre decision to further deplete the squad.

Leeds haven’t signed any first-team players during the January transfer window yet and judging by Bielsa’s words, he now feels they need more cover in that position this month.

It’s admirable that he has let Drameh go and play more regularly despite disagreeing with his decision, but he now must hope that decision doesn’t come back around and bite him later in the campaign.
