Junior Firpo declares himself fit for Leeds vs West Ham

Leeds have been given a major fitness boost after left-back Junior Firpo declared himself fit to play against West Ham this weekend in the Premier League.

The Whites picked up their first Premier League victory since November last time out with a 3-1 win over Burnley, before suffering defeat to the Hammers in the FA Cup third round.

During that game, Firpo suffered a head injury that forced him off and made him a doubt for the weekend league game against the same opposition.

That meant Leeds would’ve been without up to 12 first-team stars for the game, but the former Barcelona man has revealed to BBC Radio Leeds [via Yorkshire Evening Post] that he is fully recovered and fit to play.

“I’m good,” said Firpo. “We have just followed the protocols about these types of things in a game but I feel good. I am fit. I am okay.

“We don’t need any more injuries at the moment.”

Boost

The news of Firpo being fit to play is a major boost for Leeds and Marcelo Bielsa, who are desperate to find some good form in the second half of this season.

Leeds have only managed four wins from 19 games so far this season, but sit eight points above the relegation zone as things stand.

Firpo had arguably his best performance in a Leeds shirt in the win over Burnley, with the switch to a back-four formation potentially playing it’s part in that.

Leeds will see the game against West Ham as a chance of redemption following the controversial defeat last week in the FA Cup, where there was a questionable offside call in the build-up to the opening goal.

Bielsa will be without Diego Llorente through suspension, which means the experience of Firpo in the defence will be much appreciated.

They need a result, so having as many players fit as possible is a good start towards achieving that.
