Manchester United want Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips in case Declan Rice falls through

Manchester United have identified Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips as a Declan Rice alternative in the summer.

According to The Mirror, the billionaire-owned club will prioritise signing the Hammers midfielder in the summer.

However, if that falls through, Phillips will be identified as an alternative, despite the fact that he’s a boyhood Leeds fan.

It is understood that the 26-year-old would not fancy a switch to Old Trafford, given the animosity between the two clubs.

Time to worry?

Leeds have not kicked on this season as many expected them to and everyone deserves their fair share of blame.

Marcelo Bielsa wasn’t backed in either of the windows properly and the board must take responsibility for that.

He’s also been unlucky with injuries so he cannot be faulted for having to play teenagers on several occasions.

However, in certain games, his dogmatic approach has cost Leeds a number of points and no player has shown any sign of progress this season.

If Phillips sees his career stagnating, then one cannot blame him for leaving in search of Champions League football.

He would certainly want to prove his credentials as one of the best midfielders in Europe and there’s only so much he could achieve at Elland Road.

These indeed are worrying times for the Leeds United fans and it remains to be seen whether or not Phillips and Raphinha stay on for another year.
