Luiz Diaz injury update shared ahead of Premier League clash v Leeds United

Luiz Diaz is expected to be on the Liverpool bench for the Reds’ Premier League clash against Leeds United on Monday evening, according to Liverpool World.

The Colombian international is returning from a long-term knee injury which has seen him miss the majority of the 2022/23 season.

However, the 26-year-old is expected to make a return to the matchday squad on Monday (17 April), with a place on the bench the most likely outcome.

Talking ahead of the clash against Leeds, Jurgen Klopp has shared an update on the dynamic winger.

“I can tell you the two sessions he had with us in Dubai at the training camp it was like, ‘Oh my god, how good is that?’ Then he was injured again,” said the Liverpool boss (Liverpool World, 13 April).

“When he’s back he will be really good and very impactful, of course. That’s clear, [but] how quickly I don’t know. We have to see, that’s the big challenge in these moments – there’s no time for being patient but you have to be patient.”

Sensation

For Leeds’ sake, everyone will be hoping Diaz is unable to feature at Elland Road. Since moving to Anfield in January 2022 the 26-year-old has 18 goals and assists in just 38 matches. Considering Liverpool’s disappointing season to date, there’s a strong chance the winger would’ve had a significant impact had he remained fit and firing for the whole campaign.

We need to see a reaction from Gracia’s men against the Merseysiders. The damage from the 5-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace is still fresh in the memory and an improved performance and result would quickly see the fixture against Roy Hodgson’s side forgotten.

It’s essential Leeds manage the game in a far better way. If they’re open and expansive against Liverpool they could be torn apart on the counterattack by the likes of Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah. A strong defensive performance will be the bedrock of any positive result.
