Liverpool beat Leeds United and Manchester United in transfer race to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV
Liverpool have officially won the race to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV, leaving Leeds United and Manchester United regretting their transfer approach.
PSV made an official announcement on Boxing Day that the Netherlands international is set to move to Anfield.
The two sides have reached an agreement and quickly moved to make things official, ending a long-drawn transfer saga.
The Mirror [17 December] reported that Leeds, Manchester United and even Arsenal were keenly pursuing his services in January.
It was understood that the Whites were even in talks with the player’s representatives and there were hopes of getting this deal done.
However, Liverpool have come in from nowhere and secured his services and that should end all talks about him possibly moving to Elland Road.
Jesse Marsch has spoken on record about being extremely close to signing Gakpo and what could’ve been if they managed to get him over the line.
Leeds surely would not have been in this current predicament and now it’s back to the drawing board for Victor Orta in order to bring in a proven attacker in January.
They did everything they could to pursue his services and even had a private jet ready on transfer deadline day but once again it was too little too late.
Watching him play in the Premier League is certainly going to be a kick in the face for the Leeds hierarchy as they know just how good he is and he’s likely to be a success at Anfield.
