Leeds United continue talks with Cody Gakpo advisers amid Manchester United and Arsenal transfer interest
Leeds United have reportedly continued to speak to the advisers of PSV attacker Cody Gakpo despite Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle keen on him.
According to the Mirror [17 December], the race now seems down to four clubs with Manchester United, Newcastle and Arsenal in it, but Leeds not being among the favourites to secure his services.
Real Madrid are said to be the final time with a realistic chance of landing him in January while Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag hopes to bank on his previous relationship with the Netherlands attacker.
Did everything possible
Leeds did everything they could in order to land the 23-year-old over the summer and even had a private jet on standby to sign him in the wee hours of the window.
They knew that after September 2022, signing him would be nigh on impossible, especially if he goes on to set the stage alight at the World Cup in Qatar.
That’s precisely what happened as he impressed for Louis van Gaal’s side and was their best player en route to their quarter-final defeat on penalties against eventual finalists Argentina.
We’re surprised why Leeds are still continuing talks as it’s pretty clear he’s not going to prioritise a move to Elland Road.
Real Madrid can offer him the chance to be at one of the biggest clubs in the world and challenge for the league and Champions League every season.
Arsenal, Newcastle and Manchester United all have deeper pockets and the Gunners may even be Premier League champions and could use that in the negotiations in order to edge it in their favour.
