Liam Cooper makes new Leeds United contract admission ahead of playoff clash v Southampton

Leeds United defender Liam Cooper has admitted that conversations around his future haven’t yet been held ahead of the playoff final.

The Whites are set to face Southampton at Wembley on Sunday (26 May) as they look to build on their win over Norwich and make their return to the Premier League under Daniel Farke’s management

While reports have previously suggested Cooper is desperate to extend his stay at Elland Road beyond the end of the season [Sunday People, 19 May] the Scottish international has revealed that he knows Leeds have more important matters at hand.

As quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post (21 May) he said: “Obviously those conversations haven’t happened yet.

“I think we can all see a lot bigger things going on than to worry about things like that.”

Will Liam Cooper leave Leeds United and Elland Road in the summer transfer window?

Cooper is a modern-day Leeds United legend for what he has achieved during his time at Elland Road. The Scotsman has been a part of the highs under Marcelo Bielsa to the lows under Jesse Marsch and has never once given up.

While that doesn’t immediately mean that he is deserving of a new contract, especially if the Whites do win promotion back to the Premier League, he deserves plenty of respect from the club and the fans for his work.

That being said, it did feel like he was almost saying goodbye to the fanbase in Leeds’ win over Norwich City at Elland Road as he interacted with fans and shared an emotional lap on the field with his family following the full-time whistle.

It feels likely that he could have played his final game as a Whites player in front of the home crowd. That could change in the coming days depending on what happens at Wembley, but at the moment, it would be a surprise to see him extend his stay.
