Leeds want Brenden Aaronson in January after Kalvin Phillips injury

Leeds United are keen on RB Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson following a long-term injury to Kalvin Phillips, according to Sunday People.

The newspaper report in their print edition (page 59, 26 December) that the USA international, 21, fits Marcelo Bielsa’s need for athletic players due to his style of play.

They claim Aaronson is an attractive option for the Elland Road outfit given the investment in the club from the San Francisco 49ers.

Boost?

Phillips is arguably Leeds most influential player, and failure to bring in a capable cover in the summer transfer window is starting to hurt the club.

They hardly win when the England international midfielder is out of their line-up, and bringing in a player capable of replicating his role next month makes sense.

However, luring the Austrian outfit into parting ways with Aaronson could be very tricky.

The 15-cap USMNT star is having his breakthrough season with the club, playing a huge role in helping them reach the Champions League last-16.

The Elland Road outfit will need to part with top dollar to land him, and the 49ers could make that possible.

The quality of signings they make in January could play a huge role in their chances of holding on to their Premier League status at the end of the 2021-22 campaign, and having their last two games postponed could also help.

Leeds will have to play Liverpool and Aston Villa at later dates, and having their injured and Covid-19-hit players available by then, coupled with new signings, should do them a lot of good.
