Leeds United: Wilfried Gnonto injury news emerges as Italy make decision
Leeds United star Wilfried Gnonto has remained with the Italy U21 squad despite concerns over a hamstring injury, after avoiding a serious blow, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.
The newspaper shared via their website on 20 November that the winger is expected to feature in the Tuesday night clash against Ireland [21 November] despite pulling up in their previous game.
Escaping any significant damage will come as a boost to Daniel Farke and his medical staff as concerns would have risen, with Gnonto having only recently returned from a different injury.
A boost for Leeds
Having Gnonto fit and firing when he returns from international duty will be key for Farke and his team. Although he has struggled for regular game time of late, the Italian is still a vital part of the squad and a key difference-maker in the tough games.
This lack of game time resulted in Gnonto dropping from the Italian senior team to the U21 side, where he has spent the international break, but he will be hoping to break back into both first teams in the coming months.
Leeds will hope that, if he starts as expected against Ireland on Tuesday, there is no risk of aggravating an injury which saw him forced off in the 7-0 victory against San Marino, given that he is definitely staying with the Italy squad.
Returning to Elland Road, or even simply being rested for the next game, would have been a better option if concerns over the potential hamstring injury were as high as first suggested, but with the doctors lending him a clean bill of health, fingers will be crossed that they’ve made the right call.
