Leeds United: Wigan Athletic enter race to sign Joe Gelhardt
Wigan Athletic have emerged as the latest club to be interested in signing Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt, according to Football League World.
Gelhardt left Wigan for Leeds back in the summer of 2020 amid the club’s financial troubles and has already made 21 appearances for the Latics.
The report revealed that Wigan “would love” to re sign the Leeds United striker and will battle Swansea City for his signature this month.
“Wigan Athletic would love to sign Joe Gelhardt back from Leeds United, sources have exclusively revealed to Football League World,” as quoted by Football League World (10 January).
“Leeds are now closing in on the signing of Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim and, as a result of that, are planning on giving Gelhardt permission to move out on loan.
“Football League World understands that Wigan would be keen on reuniting with the 20-year-old this window.”
With Rutter’s Elland Road arrival imminent it’s hard to see past the club letting Gelhardt leave whether that’s on loan or a permanent basis.
Whilst everyone wants to see the youngster get some game time it could prove to be a foolish mistake from the Whites to let him go.
Leeds United still doesn’t have an array of options up top and with Patrick Bamford constantly injured letting another one leave the team is a questionable decision.
It’s frustrating for Gelhardt who obviously has an abundance of talent, he just can’t seem to get a shot under Jesse Marsch.
And a move back to the club he moved to Elland Road from feels like a step in the wrong direction even if it gives him a renewed sense of confidence.
Whatever happens, it would be nice to see Gelhardt get a decent run in a Leeds United team soon, he’s far too talented to go to waste.
