Leeds United want striker and left-back in January, Kai Wagner named by Phil Hay

The Athletic’s Phil Hay suggests that Leeds United want to make two new additions next month and namedropped Kai Wagner as a possible signing.

Leeds United are expected to be busy in the transfer market next month, with Jesse Marsch keen to develop and reinforce his squad with new additions.

Injuries and lack of form have often left the American with very few options to rotate and freshen up his side, and two positions in particular are crying out for some attention.

As reported by Hay in The Athletic, Leeds want to make changes to their squad in January, ideally through the addition of a striker and a left-back.

For the latter, Hay named Philadelphia Union’s Wagner in the “list of possibilities”. The 25-year-old German-born left-back could arrive at Elland Road to replace the outcasted Junior Firpo.

Leeds making signings or not next month could be the difference between survival or not. The Whites have a long-term plan with Andrea Radrizzani to become a stable top-flight club, but it’s at risk of all being thrown away.

Marsch steered the Leeds ship to safety last season, but the American will be worried about having to do it all over again if he isn’t properly backed in January.

Patrick Bamford’s persistent injuries and poor form have left Rodrigo isolated as the squad’s only natural striker, while Marsch has completely lost trust in Firpo after his horror performances and lack of reliability this season.

It’s not a secret to any fans, pundits or players that Leeds are desperate to address those areas in January and failure to do so will be catastrophic.

Leeds will likely be tangled up in another tense relegation dogfight this season and not giving Marsch natural players in each position will be sending him into the fight with one hand tied behind his back.
