Leeds United to discuss future of striker Max Dean as teenager eyes more minutes

Michael Skubala has admitted Leeds United teenager Max Dean will “sit down” with the club and discuss his future at Elland Road, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The 18-year-old forward was brought on after an hour of Leeds Under-21s’ narrow defeat to Nottingham Forest on Friday evening (6 January), proving himself a handful in his brief cameo.

Dean has scored four times in four appearances for the Leeds junior side this season – including a stunning hat-trick against Newcastle United – but has seen his minutes limited due to the emergence of Mateo Joseph and Sonny Perkins this campaign.

Following the Whites’ first defeat this term, the Under-21s head coach Skubala told the Yorkshire Evening Post a frank conversation would have to take place with the youngster as he grows ever more eager for minutes.

He said: “Max is doing well, and I thought when he came on tonight he looked lively. And probably this game it was good for him in that way.

“I think Max needs more minutes, but yeah, I think it’s a decision to sit down and see where we think Max is in his development.”

Loan move needed

Although Dean has been waiting patiently for an extended run in the high-flying Whites team this season, the ridiculously impressive form of Perkins and Joseph has left him occupying the bench on a regular basis.

Joseph has been referenced by Marsch on numerous occasions in press conferences, while Perkins also trained with the first team during the six-week World Cup hiatus. This has left Dean a little in the cold, and a loan move to a club in the football league could do his development wonders.

The striker has netted 16 times in 37 appearances for the young Whites, which is a respectable record, considering he has often played second fiddle. He will likely have attracted a host of attention from EFL clubs, and it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see numerous suitors swooping in for his services this month.

Currently, the attacker’s contract expires at Elland Road this summer, so his future at Leeds will likely hinge on these upcoming talks with the club’s hierarchy.
