Leeds United set to miss out on Brenden Aaronson

Leeds United are set to miss out on Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson in January, according to Mike McGrath.

The Telegraph journalist reports on their website that the Elland Road outfit will not be able to bring the USA international, 21, to west Yorkshire following the Austrian outfit’s qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Aaronson’s departure in the winter transfer window is considered “remote” as Salzburg have a lot to play for after setting up a meeting with Bayern Munich in the last-16 of Europe’s elite competition.

Expected

Leeds need to make midfield additions right now with Kalvin Phillips out till February, and the former Philadelphia Union star would be perfect for the job.

However, his club will fancy their chances against the Bundesliga giants with him in the starting XI, and they are not willing to cash in on him with a lot still to play for in 2021-22.

Aaronson is also likely to be against leaving Salzburg for the Whites right now.

Despite the promises they showed last term, Marcelo Bielsa’s side are struggling to impress in their second season back in the top-flight, and a relegation battle seems to be on the cards.

It will be hard to see a player that is willing to swap Champions League football for a survival fight, and it is safe to say Leeds have to look elsewhere now.

Bielsa is not a fan of the January transfer window, but the injuries and poor form could force his hand next month.

He could do with a quality cover for Phillips in the middle of the park, while the attack needs one or two additions given their struggles in front of goal so far.
