Leeds United receive transfer boost as Ola Aina 'open' to summer move
Leeds United may have received a big boost in the race to sign Torino defender Ola Aina.
The Gazzetta dello Sport reported on 16 June (printed edition, page 15) that the 25-year-old right wing-back is “open” to leaving the club.
He is aware that he has admirers in the Premier League. The Nigerian recently impressed in games for his country, but Torino want him to stay put.
Leeds reportedly have been chasing Aina for a while.
The famous pink Italian newspaper reported on 9 June (page 14) that the Whites have made an approach through international intermediaries to enquire about his situation.
Aina knows English football very well, having progressed through the youth ranks at Chelsea. In 2020-21, Aina joined Fulham on loan where he made 33 appearances.
The key here is his contract. The Nigerian international has only a year left on his deal and Torino – despite their public stance – do not want to lose him for free.
Leeds have already signed Rasmus Kristensen this summer, and doubts remain whether they would be at all willing to sign another full-back, where other areas of the pitch need bolstering.
At the same time, considering his age, quality, and contract situation, Leeds can get a solid player on the cheap. He could be an ideal long-term replacement for Luke Ayling.
The 30-year-old struggled last season (2021-22), and he is expected to miss a chunk of next season as he recovers from injury.
Aina wants to leave, and it’s upto Leeds to reach an agreement if they’re serious about him.
In other Leeds United news, talks are scheduled after Leeds tabled a big-money bid to secure another new signing.
