Leeds United' Raphinha embarrasses himself with simulation at Crystal Palace says Chris Sutton

Leeds United star Raphinha was “embarrassed” for simulation after a clash with Wilfried Zaha at Crystal Palace according to Chris Sutton.

The Brazilian received a hand to the face from the Ivorian forward as the home side looked to launch an attack late in the first half, and caused fury when referee Darren England halted play for a potential head injury.

The 25-year-old quickly got back up, leading to outrage from the Palace players and manager Patrick Vieira and cries of “you don’t know what you’re doing from the home fans”.

Commenting on the incident on BBC Radio 5 Live Sutton was not impressed, saying: “Raphinha goes to ground like he’s been smashed round the head with a shovel.

“Feelings running high here. I think Zaha does palm him off, but does he really need to go down like that Raphinha? He’s better than that.”

Commentator Jonathan Pearce said of the Palace star: “He takes a heck of a lot of stick. I’m not too sure he was right to palm Raphinha off in the face as he did though.”

But Sutton doubled down on the Whites winger, saying: “I think it’s poor from Raphinha. I think after a few seconds he was embarrassed about the way he went down.”

The standout from this season was well below his best at Selhurst Park, which contributed to the stalemate.

Points are again at a premium, with Burnley suddenly threatening after the removal of Sean Dyche.

The draw puts United three points ahead of the Clarets, with Everton two points further back.

Jesse Marsch has now led the team on a five-game unbeaten stretch, which is a huge improvement from the form around the managerial change.

Again though, the performance was not fantastic tonight so there is plenty of room for improvement.

The decision to stick with Dan James up front backfired as his main contribution was nearly getting sent off.

But another clean sheet after the 3-0 win over Watford is a bonus, and keeps the team in the relegation fight driving seat for now.

In other Leeds United news, the club reportedly have a route to steal a highly-rated “wonderkid” from under the noses of rivals.
