Leeds United 'premium' signing mooted for January by Sky Sports journalist
Leeds United could look to sign a “premium” striker in the January window as Jesse Marsch looks to solve his striker shortage, according to Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas.
90min reported (29 December) that Leeds were in the hunt for Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres, with the 24-year-old potentially available for £16million.
Thomas has since suggested that top-class goalscorers come at a premium in January with a number of struggling clubs looking to land a striker to pull them away from trouble.
“Leeds are looking to add a new left-back and another striker to their squad next month,” he wrote (Sky Sports, 1 January).
“There has been criticism of Junior Firpo since his arrival from Spain but Jesse Marsch believes he can still develop into a top player.
“In the meantime, though the club are looking for some help on the left of defence, while better strikers are always sought-after by teams looking to secure their top-flight status for next season. Leeds are no different – but top goalscorers come at a premium.”
The 0-0 draw at Newcastle was an excellent result for Leeds but also highlighted their need to land another striker in the January window. The Whites offered very little goal threat during the clash at St James’ Park and had Illan Meslier to thank for the well-earned point in the North East.
Had Marsch had another striker to throw into the equation, the outcome of the match could’ve been very different for the West Yorkshire side. Rodrigo has been superb so far this season, but it’s not reasonable or realistic to assume the Spaniard will keep up his good goalscoring form going throughout the whole campaign.
The Elland Road board will have to be ambitious and provide the American with significant financial support if they wish to land an in-form striker in January. There are a number of struggling Premier League clubs who are looking to add more goals to their ranks which will see players’ valuations skyrocket.
In other Leeds United news, Chris Waddle was far from pleased with this Whites player after what he did against Newcastle.
