Wilfried Gnonto slammed by BBC pundit for 'needless' moment in Leeds United draw v Newcastle United
Wilfried Gnonto was again lively for Leeds United against Newcastle United but Chris Waddle was not impressed with one moment.
The Italian international perhaps showed his immaturity as he picked up a yellow card midway through the second half at St James’ Park as the Whites held on to a 0-0 draw.
The teenager was a livewire for Jesse Marsch’s side in the North East but did get himself needlessly among the Magpies with a couple of boisterous moments in an entertaining game.
Waddle was of the same opinion on BBC Radio 5 Live, not appreciating how he went into a challenge and got himself cautioned when he could have easily avoided that fate.
“Needless yellow card for Gnonto. He’s got to watch himself here,” he said.
Given how good he has looked so far in the white of Leeds United, it can be easy to forget that Gnonto is just 18 years of age and he is playing at the very top for the first time in his life.
He has to be allowed to make this kind of mistake from time to time and learn as a footballer and a person because it is hard enough as it is in the Premier League without some leeway in this department.
His talent and potential is undeniable and he has to be somebody Marsch puts his weight behind and gives regular game time this season because he does have a match-winning ability.
He may not have shown it quite yet but it is there and with Crysencio Summerville also proving to be a game-changing player, the future looks bright at Elland Road with others set to follow in their footsteps.
