Leeds United plot late move to sign Sheffield United defender John Egan

Leeds United are pushing hard to sign Sheffield United defender John Egan before the transfer deadline, according to a report from The Express.

The Whites are considering tabling an offer for the 29-year-old defender, who played in every minute of the Blades’ 2021/22 season.

He has started the season strongly and has been ever-present for the Blades so far.

The report from Express (31 August) suggests that the Whites feel that they could prise him away from Bramall Lane, but Sheffield United could be reluctant to let him go.

Final-day drama?

The Republic of Ireland international has been a figure of consistency for Sheffield United. He joined the club in 2018 from Brentford and has made over 170 appearances for the club.

He has a contract at the club till 2024, but a move to the Premier League could be tempting for him if Leeds come up with an offer.

This has been a terrific summer transfer window for the Whites, and it remains to be seen whether they will be involved in some late activities tomorrow.

Jesse Marsch has got a lot of options in defence, but at the moment he is missing several players through injury.

The likes of Liam Cooper. Luke Ayling and Junior Firpo are on their path to recovery while Stuart Dallas remains a long-term absentee.

At the moment, the deal looks difficult. Sheffield are looking to get into the Premier League, and losing their key defender would be a massive blow for the club.

Egan could be a decent back-up option, but he is someone Leeds can do without. Signing a striker or an attacker midfielder remains an option for the Whites.
