Leeds United only team to make firm transfer offer for Azzedine Ounahi in January

Leeds United were reportedly the only team in January to make a proper offer for Azzedine Ounahi who was then at Angers.

After his World Cup exploits with Morocco, the interest in the midfielder skyrocketed and the Whites were on his trail.

He did move to Marseille for a lot less than what Leeds had offered, as the 22-year-old did not fancy a move to Elland Road.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romain Molina of the Guardian said, “He went to Marseille for €8million + €2million [£8.8million], it’s true, knowing that Leeds had offered €20million [£17.6million]. Only Leeds had a firm offer on Ounahi. Naples had inquired a little, but the firm offer came from Leeds. The player didn’t want to go.”

Weird one

Angers had the perfect chance to drive up his price as much as they could and be the ones deciding the course of his future.

After major tournaments, players with good performances usually see their valuations hiked, especially if they’re not already established or representing one of the underdogs.

A host of clubs around Europe were keen on signing him and he would’ve been a solid fit for Leeds who desperately needed an eight like him.

However, he decided not to take the gamble and preferred to stay in his comfort zone in France, perhaps losing the chance of playing in the Premier League.

If his move to Marseille goes south, there are no guarantees that an English top flight club will want him as he could just be a one-hit wonder.

Weston McKennie was signed instead of Ounahi and while the American is new to the league, he’s got to improve his performance as he’s been far from convincing.

In other Leeds United news, Ian Wright cannot believe his eyes after footage surfaces of a Leeds player on social media.
