Leeds United now worried about Matheus Cunha pursuit as Chelsea ready to swoop

Chelsea could now scupper the chances of Leeds United signing Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid in January, according to the Evening Standard.

The Blues are looking for attacking reinforcements after Armando Broja was ruled out for the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury in their friendly against Aston Villa.

As a result, Graham Potter could be offered not just Cunha but also Joao Felix with both likely to leave the Wanda Metropolitano in the January transfer window.

These offers are now starting to concern people at Leeds United after their own approach to sign the South American in the upcoming window.

It is believed that the Brazilian is actually holding out on having talks with either the Whites or Wolves to see if a move to Stamford Bridge does materialise.

You can hardly blame the 23-year-old for wanting to join a club battling for a European spot this season over the aforementioned duo who are more likely to be in the Championship than the Champions League next season.

For Victor Orta and Andrea Radrizzani, it might be a deal they have to remain patient with until later in the window and see if Potter does decide to bring one or both of them to the capital.

They have to have some contingency plans in place to bolster Jesse Marsch’s attacking department if Cunha does head to Chelsea instead of Elland Road and it will need to be a long list.

Clubs tend to be reluctant to sell in the middle of a season so they may be asked to pay more than usual to get a deal over the line but that is what is necessary to keep the club moving forwards and not towards the lower league again.

Red tape is emerging, and if Chelsea press the green button, it looks as though the Whites stand no chance.

In other Leeds United news, Cunha is not the only January target causing concern at Thorp Arch with this Champions League ace worrying Orta.
