Super Computer makes brand new Leeds United, Leicester City and Ipswich Town promotion prediction
Leeds United will miss out to Leicester City and Ipswich Town on automatic promotion back to the Premier League, according to a supercomputer.
Opta Analyst provided an updated prediction of how the Championship season will pan out on Tuesday (21 November), with 16 out of 46 games played.
Leeds are the division’s form team, but they are still eight points adrift of top-two Leicester and Ipswich – a gap they are not expected to fully bridge.
The Whites are said to have a 22.2% chance of finishing second, compared to 40.4% for Ipswich, while Leicester have a 79.9% chance of finishing top and just a 3.6% chance of missing out on the top two entirely.
Improbable… not impossible
Leeds are in sensational form, having won six of their past seven league games in a run that includes victory over leaders Leicester.
Daniel Farke’s men have also overcome Ipswich this campaign, so clearly they are capable of mounting a challenge for the auto promotion spots.
However, a slow start to 2023-24 may well come back to haunt them, as they are still a fair way off the leading duo.
As per Opta Analyst, Leicester and Ipswich have accrued eight and nine points more respectively than expected going by the underlying figures.
Leeds, by comparison, have picked up up as many points as you would expect them to.
That does provide some hope as it suggests Leicester and Ipswich are overperforming and will hopefully drop off over the remaining games.
Indeed, that already appears to be the case for City as they have lost back-to-back games, while Ipswich have one win in four outings.
Automatic promotion is improbable, of course, but a continuation of how things have gone over the past month will make things very interesting.
In other Leeds news, Fabrizio Romano has shared details on whether Tottenham could sign a United player in January.
